This is proving to be an eventful year for Alarm.com. The 15-year-old technology company just filed for its initial public offering and announced plans to move its headquarters to Tysons Corner, Va. , in the fall.

The fast-growing company aims to be the epitome of what tech mavens call "the Internet of things," in which a variety of devices and everyday appliances can be connected through the global network.

The company describes its technology as the largest smart-home platform. It allows homeowners to monitor and control their homes remotely, such as locking and unlocking doors or changing the thermostat via phone or smartwatch.
