Alarm.com for Business Stories: Keeping Nurses and Doctors Safe

In early 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic ramped up nationwide, an Alarm.com service provider contacted Jake Voll, President of SS&Si Dealer Network, about a complicated commercial security project involving a local hospital. Their needs were specific, and the stakes were incredibly high.

The service provider was tasked with finding a way to use video cameras with two-way voice communication across 40 hospital rooms, in order for nurses and doctors to communicate with sick patients without exposing themselves to the virus or wasting limited personal protective equipment (PPE). On top of all this, they also needed to meet the hospital's stringent security requirements.

After assessing the situation, Jake knew Alarm.com's Wellcam offered an out-of-the-box solution. The video camera's wide field of view, 1080p video, and two-way communication made it ideal for healthcare workers to communicate with patients clearly.

"There were other hardware options, but Alarm.com's platform kind of sealed the deal," Jake says. "We don't see anything that compares apples to apples with Alarm.com. They combine a smart home and smart building platform with security, video, access control, and now even health and wellness, to offer a robust ecosystem and platform."

While the hospital's IT department was initially reluctant to integrate the cameras into their network, they were convinced by Alarm.com's secure platform and HIPAA compliance and agreed to set up a separate WiFi network to provide coverage for the cameras.

"The safety and wellbeing of healthcare workers is personal to me," Jake says, reflecting on the success of the project.

Jake's wife is a nurse practitioner, making him more familiar than most with the challenges posed by COVID. He knew how difficult it was to source protective equipment, having previously reached out on Facebook and LinkedIn to ask his customers, vendors and even his competitors for masks for his wife's office.

"Selling hardware for this project was great," he says. "But doing something to increase the safety of those frontline healthcare workers was fulfilling."
